China Secretly Building Military Facility In This Country: Report
China is building Navy facilities in Cambodia for military use, the second front post abroad and the first in the Indo-Pacific region is strategically significant.
The presence of the military will be in the northern part of the Ream Cambodian Navy base, in the Gulf of Thailand, The Washington Post reports. This is the only other Chinese foreign military base now after naval facilities in East Africa Djibouti.
Such a base can allow the spread of military forces in the theater, and monitoring US military intelligence, according to the report.
Further said that the new Navy base is part of Beijing’s strategy to build a network of military facilities around the world to support its aspirations to become a true global force.
Having facilities that are able to host a large navy will be an important element of the country’s ambitions to expand its influence in the region, according to US officials and analysts, said.
We consider that Indo-Pacific is an important part of Chinese leaders, who see Indo-Pacific as the scope of the legitimate and historic influence of China,” said a Western official. “They view the increase in China there as part of a global trend towards a multipolar world where the main force is stronger confirms their interests within the scope of the felt influence.”
China has signed a secret agreement to allow its military to use the base, quoting the US and allied officials who are familiar with this problem, according to the Wall Street Journal published in 2019.
However, the two countries have denied the report. At that time, the two Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Chinese Ministry of Defense had rejected the report.
