Babies In The Womb Smile For Carrots But Grimace Over Kale, Study Finds

Fetus made more “cries of the face” in the womb when exposed to the water spinach consumed by their mother and made more “laughter faces” when exposed to carrots, a new study released this week was revealed.
The findings of this study have an important implication to understand the earliest evidence for the ability of the fetus to feel and distinguish different feelings,” the researchers wrote in the study published in the Wise Journal.

They saw a healthy fetus from around 100 women in the UK. Researchers give capsule mothers containing powder versions of two foods. 35 Women are put into an experimental group that consumes organic kale capsules, 35 are put into groups that take carrot capsules, and 30 are put into control groups that are not exposed to withered taste.

About 20 minutes later, the researchers said that the 4D ultrasonic scan showed that most of the fetus exposed to water spinach seemed grimacing, while most of the carrots were exposed to smiling. The control group, on the other hand, does have the same response.

When the fetus is exposed to carrot, they are more likely to show a ‘laughter face’ reaction, and when they are exposed to water spinach, they are more likely to show the ‘facial cry’ reaction, “the researchers wrote.

We also found that the facial response to taste became more complex when the fetus was ripe,” they added.

Now, the research researchers propose, based on the findings, that repeated exposure to certain flavors in the womb may be a factor in building food preferences after birth. They believe that if the fetus regularly is exposed to vegetables such as water spinach while in the womb, they may be more likely to tolerate or enjoy it later on.

The researchers also said that mothers who have a healthy diet when they are pregnant can also find that their babies are more fussy eaters. However, the research authors note that further research is still needed to determine with certainty if the fetus is able to experience emotions, likes, and dislikes.
