Biden Hands the Taliban a Propaganda Victory

Spotlight this week: President Joe Joe Biden. The executive message on the assets of the Afghan Central Bank freezes to help the Taliban, the election of the country is taking place in India – with the potential shake-up in Punjab, and the United States gives a warning to Nepal.

This week marked six months since Kabul fell to the Taliban, and today, the regime was above his head. The takeover of the Afghan Taliban triggered US sanctions that had produced a humanitarian crisis. Losing important international assistance, the regime has failed to alleviate the country’s economic pressure because it wrestles with another crisis, from severe droughts in internal friction.

Even though they did not face a decent opposition, the inability of the Taliban to bring assistance to the people of Afghan has hampered their efforts to obtain domestic legitimacy. Their public celebrations of suicide bombings, crackdown in journalists and female activists, and a counter-attack on those who were loyal to the previous government had not yet helped their purposes.

Executive order of A.S. What is controversial on the assets of the Afghan central bank held in the United States can provide a big boost for the surrounded Taliban regime. Orders, announced last week, set aside $ 3.5 billion from these assets eventually provide assistance to Afghans. But funds will not go to Afghanistan which is hit by starvation in the near future. Afghanistan has been united in the opposition to the policy, giving the Taliban of a great propaganda victory that can eliminate Washington from several leverage over the regime.

The executive order of the White House is good intentions. Litigation, led by several families from 9/11 victims, seeks to get access to $ 7 billion in Afghan’s central bank assets held at the Federal Reserve A.S. What is frozen as the Taliban took power. The executive command basically divides the assets into two, leaving half open to the 9/11 claim while moving the other half into the trust fund that can eventually be used to help Afghanistan.

Afghanistan throughout the Board condemned the command A.S., denounced it as a step to tear their national assets when their country slid against economic collapse. This reaction partly comes from Poor A.S. Book: Biden government takes several days to respond to the wrong report, including advocated suggestions for the 9/11 family to receive frozen assets.

On Tuesday, Thomas West, U.S. Special representatives for Afghanistan, also clarified that the United States had not made the decision to convert $ 3.5 billion to move to trust funds specifically in humanitarian aid. Many Afghans have opposed such steps, arguing humanitarian aid must come from computers A.S., not Afghan reserves. The West said he consulted with Afghan economists about how $ 3.5 billion must be used in Afghanistan.

This clarification of Biden giving can alleviate anger, but it might also be too late. Afghan Diaspora has united too. Their reaction to the executive order reflects deep concerns about the United States sitting in frozen Afghan reserves amid humanitarian disasters. Administrative officials even recognize that despite plans to free $ 3.5 billion to support Afghanistan, there is no schedule when money will be available. Afghanistan on the threshold of starvation has no luxury waiting for funds released.

Meanwhile, the Taliban can attack to Washington for stealing a silver family, maybe getting some goodwill by taking a public supported Afghanistan. With Washington Telegraphing plans to use half of frozen assets, the risk of officials u.S. Lost the main tool leverage for the regime: Washington can no longer use assets as a pressure point to push the Taliban to human rights and inclusiveness.
